Valles Marineris: The Grand Canyon of Mars - APOD [2011]

Credit: Viking Project“The largest canyon in the Solar System cuts a wide swath across the face of Mars. Named Valles Marineris, the grand valley extends over 3,000 kilometers long, spans as much as 600 kilometers across, and delves as much as 8 kilometers deep. By comparison, the Earth’s Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA is 800 kilometers long, 30 kilometers across, and 1.8 kilometers deep. The origin of the Valles Marineris remains unknown, although a leading hypothesis holds that it started as a crack billions of years ago as the planet cooled. Recently, several geologic processes have been identified in the canyon. The above mosaic was created from over 100 images of Mars taken by Viking Orbiters in the 1970s.”

Light in The Subway - Canyoneering in Zion National Park“I had the great privilege of canyoneering “The Subway” route in Zion National Park (Utah) for a second time last weekend. It is truly a spectacular canyon, especially this section for which it is named. The light shining through the subway leads you around the corner to the grand exit. Perhaps another time I will post a photo of that part. Oh, and I must point out that the slippery slope coming in from the left makes a great water slide. To save space and weight while canyoneering I didn’t take a big tripod this time, so this photo was taken with my Gorillapod, while lying in the stream.Canon EOS 5D Mark IISeptember 26th 2010Copyright : Daniel Peckham
